Smudge a small casserole dish with butter, (use a piece of wax paper to wipe the butter all over the inside of the casserole dish)
Wash and peel about 6 macintosh apples.
Cut the apples in half, then each half again to make quarters.
Cut out the nasty bits, (the seeds, the hard casings that hold the seeds).
Chop each quarter into about 3 pieces and drop in the casserole dish
Drip 1/8 teaspoon almond extract over the apples, (optional)
Add about 1 tablespoon of water to the dish
Toss the topping over the apples so it's evenly distributed over them Do not mix it in - leave it spread out on top.
Cover and bake in 350 degree oven for 1/2 hour.
Take the cover off and bake for about 10 minutes more.
